Abstract: This resource guide, developed as part of the DISCOVERY CHANNEL SCIENCE COLLECTIONS series, provides science teachers and students in grades 5-9 with thirty-two pages of classroom tools for studying electricity. Organized alphabetically from Activities to Zingers, each section offers a different perspective on the nature of electrical energy. Demonstrations, Just For Fun, and Science Projects contain hands-on investigations while a Careers page illustrates how physical science is used in the real world. Black and white photographs and reproducible student worksheets support the text along with an icon-based navigational system that assists readers in locating specific types of materials.
Sample chapters include Homework Helpers, which describes electrical circuitry using Ohm's Law and Unsolved Mysteries that explores the natural phenomenon of ball lightning. Interdisciplinary connections involve building three-dimensional models of atoms and analyzing a year's worth of monthly electric bills to see how seasonal changes affect total usage. There is also a section devoted to clarifying common misconceptions about Ben Franklin and static electricity. Throughout the book, references are listed for acquiring further information and classroom resources. (Author/JG) |
