Abstract: This interactive multimedia CD-ROM, part of the AXIA WILDLIFE FIELD GUIDE series, contains a database of information about birds of prey including ways to identify them, their natural history, and regions of inhabitance as well as two multimedia presentations. Side-by-side windows allow birds to be compared or viewed next to items such as range, summer habitat, and prey. Aspect buttons, between the windows, allow users to select what information is displayed in each of the two screens. The program can be operated in either explore or challenge mode. Explore mode allows students to gain familiarity with the learning material, whereas challenge mode provides exercises designed to test students' owl identification skills. An example multimedia presentation describes the three families of the order Falconiforms, including vultures. Vultures do not have feathers on their head or neck, preventing bacteria from dead carcasses from growing there. Additionally they discharge a fluid from their legs that kills bacteria. A highlighted section allows students to compare and contrast birds and then test their ability to identify them by sound with or without their picture. If an incorrect answer is chosen the narrator shows the student what they selected in the split screen, and then asks them to try again. (Author/LEB) |
